What I Learned After Moving 3 Times in Dubai

What I Learned After Moving 3 Times in Dubai

If you’ve lived in Dubai long enough, you’ve probably moved at least once — maybe twice. In my case, it’s been three times (yes, three!). From the first move where I didn’t even label my boxes to the last one where I finally had a proper checklist, I’ve learned a lot about what not to do — and what actually makes moving easier.

So, if you’re planning your next move or even just thinking about it, here are a few real lessons I picked up along the way.

1. The 90-Day Notice Rule Is Real (Don’t Ignore It!)

When I moved for the first time, I didn’t know you needed to give your landlord 90 days’ notice before moving out. I found a new place, got excited, and told my landlord a few weeks before leaving — big mistake.

Long story short, I lost part of my deposit.
Lesson learned: always check your tenancy contract and give written notice early. A simple email or WhatsApp message (that’s acknowledged) can save you a lot of headache later.

2. Not All Movers Are the Same

After my first move, I realized how much difference a professional moving company makes. The first time, I went with the cheapest option I could find — and ended up with scratched furniture and missing screws.

By my third move, I learned to do my homework. I checked reviews, asked for proper packing materials, and made sure they offered assembly and insurance. The move was smooth, quick, and stress-free.
Sometimes, paying a little extra is totally worth it.

3. Label Everything (Seriously, Everything)

This might sound obvious, but it’s life-changing. The second time I moved, I thought I’d “remember what’s in which box.” Spoiler: I didn’t.

Now, I write the room name and a few key items on every box — for example, “Kitchen – plates, mugs, kettle.” When you move in, it saves hours of opening random boxes trying to find your toothbrush.

4. Always Take Final Meter Readings and Photos

Dubai is great with utilities — DEWA and internet setups are quick — but I learned to always take photos of your final meter reading before disconnection.

One time, my final bill came higher than usual, and having that photo saved me from paying extra.
Also, apply for DEWA disconnection online two days before your move-out date so everything’s ready on time.

5. Declutter Before You Pack

By my third move, I realized I’d been carrying the same unused things from one apartment to the next — clothes I hadn’t worn in years, old kitchen items, random cables I didn’t even recognize.

So I decided to declutter before packing. I donated things through Take My Junk UAE and gave some items away on Facebook community groups. It made moving faster, cheaper, and lighter — both physically and mentally.

6. The Right Timing Makes a Huge Difference

Here’s something many people don’t think about — when you move matters.
Avoid weekends and end-of-month days if possible. Movers are busier, roads are packed, and elevators are in high demand.
A mid-week move is usually quieter, and your movers will have more time to focus on your job properly.

Final Thoughts

After three moves in Dubai, I can confidently say — it gets easier every time if you plan right. From giving notice early and hiring reliable movers to decluttering and labeling everything, these small steps make a huge difference.

And remember, moving isn’t just about changing apartments — it’s about starting fresh. So stay calm, stay organized, and enjoy the process.
